The Reston Community Center at Lake Anne hosted Gifts from the HeART on Saturday, Dec. 8. Gifts from the HeART featured works from 20 local artists as well as more than 85 pieces of artwork on the walls of the Jo Ann Rose Gallery and pieces in the 3-D case displays.

Thompson along with Mykle Lyons, a Reston resident and founder of the Mykle Lyons Trio, started the festival out of love for music and for Lake Anne Plaza, said Thompson.

Many of the 650 participants in the Brain Aneurysm Race for Awareness, held in honor of Tim Susco, a 1999 South Lakes graduate who died suddenly in 2007 at the age of 25 from a brain aneurysm, participated in the event in memory of someone who had passed away following a brain aneurysm.

Students at Armstrong Elementary participated in Chalk 4 Peace on Thursday and Friday. Armstrong Elementary art teacher, Jordon Citron, said this was his first year organizing Chalk 4 Peace at Armstrong, but that the school participated in the activity last year. “The kids love it,” said Citron.

It felt like déjà vu on South Shore Drive near Lake Anne in Reston. A powerful wind and rain storm hit the area around 3:30 Saturday afternoon. The majority of the storm damage was concentrated, almost in a straight line, from North Shore Drive near Fairway Apartments to Weihle Avenue.

Hidden Creek golf pro, Josh Marr, plans to play 15 hours of golf Monday, July 23 for a good cause. Marr will start at Hole 1 on the Hidden Creek course around 5 a.m. and will play the course all day until dark. In 15 hours, Marr thinks he can play 125 holes of golf.

On Friday night a line of powerful storms moved through the D.C. area. The storms hit the Reston area around 10:30 p.m., taking many residents by surprise. The storms knocked out power and phone reception throughout Reston and caused significant tree damage.

"Gopher to the Rescue," a newly released book written by Reston resident Terry Jennings, examines the role of gophers in eco-system recovery following a volcanic eruption.

Iconic birds, such as the ruby throated hummingbird, birds that bear the names of our cities, like the Baltimore oriole, and birds that are thought of as uniquely North American birds, such as numerous wrens and warblers, plus more than 150 other varieties of birds travel hundreds of miles every year to spend the winter on an island in Lake Nicaragua. From September to March these birds make their home in the tropical forests of Ometepe Island. In the spring they return to eastern United States to find mates and raise their young.
